Chennai Aug 2017: India’s leading Urology and Laparoscopic Hospital chain, RG Stone Urology & Laparoscopy Hospital has organized a press conference on 30th August 2017 Wednesday, for discussing a 74 years Male who underwent Endo Urological Surgery for hugely enlarged prostate(280grams ) through HOLEP.
74 years old gentleman came to RG Stone Urology and Laparoscopy Hospital Chennai with complaints of severe obstructive lower urinary tract symptoms for the last 6 months .At the Hospital a team of experienced Urologists under the supervision of Dr.R.Vijay Kumar – Medical Director and Chief Urologist evaluated him .He was diagnosed to have hugely enlarged prostate gland (280 grams ) with Retention of urine . This patient was planned for an Endourological procedure “HOLEP “–Holmium Laser Enucleation of Prostate. By 3 lobe technique prostate lobes were enucleated and pushed into bladder .The lobes were retrieved subsequently by Morcellation. He was discharged after four days and he is under follow up.
Dr.R.Vijay Kumar Medical Director added that this Surgery could be done Endo urological procedure because of 100 watts Holmium Laser. With this equipment we can successfully operate any size of prostate gland and with minimum blood loss, rather than the conventional Trans Urethral Resection of Prostate (TURP) .The same size of gland would have required 2 or 3 stages with Blood transfusion, long hospital stay and increased complications.
Addressing the media Dr R VijayKumar, Chief Urologist RG Stone Urology & Laparoscopy Hospital said, “Prostate is a walnut sized male reproductive gland located at the base of urinary bladder surrounding the urethra (urine pipe). In a normal adult, it weighs around 20 grams. The size of the prostate gland increases slowly with age in all males. This is known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).This condition is a sign of aging and is very common in elderly males over 50 years of age. The increased size of prostate squeezes the urethra causing difficult and painful urination. In severe cases urination may even become impossible, which is an emergency requiring immediate attention. These Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) include frequent urination, straining while urinating, urging even after urination, pain or burning during urination, and/or some amount of blood in urine.”
Dr. R Vijay Kumar, also said, “Prostatectomy is the removal of all or part of the prostate gland. A variety of lasers have been developed to treat Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Each laser has its own unique optical distinctiveness that has resulted in dissimilar clinical outcomes. Holmium Laser Enucleation of Prostate (HOLEP) can effectively treat the largest of glands with minimal morbidity. It completely removes the enlarged diseased prostate lobes with immediate resolution of the obstruction. Size is not the limiting factor for HOLEP. More than 100 gram prostates not usually amenable to TUR (P) are curable through HOLEP. We are proud to announce over 1,000 successful laser prostatectomies at RG Stone Hospitals (Chennai) in variety of cases like hypertension, diabetes, patient with permanent cardiac pacemaker, Anticoagulated patient, etc.”
