Conference on ‘Gender and Media’ to be conducted in Anna University from January 4-6
The Network of Women in Media, Chennai Chapter, in association with the Department of Media Sciences, College of Engineering, Guindy, is organising a national conference on the theme “Gender and the Media: Challenges and Opportunities” from January 4 to January 6, 2018 at the Ada Lovelace Auditorium, IST Department, Anna University, Chennai.
The conference aims to bridge the gap in gender discourse and highlight the challenges faced by media practitioners. The conference intends to work towards a world which is non-binary, fluid and more equitable especially in the context of gender.
The conference will bring together a number of top women journalists from across the country, academicians, and students to discuss the role of gender in media, its evolution and what the future holds. The conference will also provide insights on the kind of reporting that is the need of the hour, censorship, gender discrimination and stereotypes – all within the media industry.
The first day on January 4, 2018 will see Magsaysay Awardee & Musician T M Krishna deliver a special address on Gender and Media.
Sunil Paliwal IAS, Principal Secretary to Government, Higher Education Secretary of Tamil Nadu will be giving a special address on January 6, 2018. Writer and Activist Va Geetha will also a key speaker.
Some of the areas which will be highlighted in the conference are press freedom and personal rights in India, politics of media and media in politics, feminist strategies and women alter narratives in mainstream Indian media, etc. Three workshops, one on internet safety, data visualisation and science writing will be offered by professionals in these various fields, for participants.
Several panel discussions are touted to happen across the three days on diverse topics such as How media pioneered change in TN, Trolling – Deal or No Deal?, etc.
